The next day, Officer Hank Brummel, on duty and in full uniform, sat in Miguelâs office trying to win over the affections of Diego, who was sprawled out on the floor, observing.
âIâve always had a way with cats,â Officer Brummel said as he reached to stroke Diegoâs head with his huge hand.
Diegoâs ears went flat, his eyes narrowed, and he ducked his head slightly under the officerâs touch while his tail swished slowly back and forth.
âIâve seen him take a manâs arm off,â Miguel said with a barely hidden smirk as he watched Diegoâs reaction.
Hank Brummel chortled but withdrew his hand.
âThat was a while ago,â Miguel continued mildly, âbut once theyâve tasted human blood . . .â
âDetective Belmonte!â Rosa scolded.
âSorry, just kidding. Heâs really a sweetheart.â
âYes, he is,â Rosa agreed.
âThat incident with the neighborâs French poodle was just a misunderstanding,â Miguel said nonchalantly as he took out his notepad from his top drawer. âWe made sure Fifi had a nice funeral. Iâm sure Mrs. Gonzales will find another dog soon.â
Rosa rolled her eyes. Miguel sometimes liked to needle suspects who he suspected had lied to him.
âOkay, I get it,â Officer Brummel said uneasily. âYouâre kiddinâ me.â He glanced down at Diego, who stared at him balefully.
Folding his arms, Officer Brummel asked, âWhat did you want to see me about?â
Miguelâs expression grew serious as he leaned forward, propped his elbows on his desk, and clasped his hands in front of him. He looked at Hank Brummel for a long moment before sighing. âI donât know what itâs like in Los Angeles, but here at the Santa Bonita precinct, we donât often have officers lie during a murder investigation.â
Hank Brummel blinked rapidly, and his face lost some of its color. âWhatcha mean?â
âYouâre married, arenât you?â Rosa said.
âTo a . . .â Miguel consulted his notes. â. . . Marjorie Brummel, formerly Marjorie Greening. You told us you were divorced and that your former wife lived in New Jersey.â
âI . . .â
âDid you think we wouldnât check you out?â Miguel asked. âThis was information our department found out with just a couple of phone calls.â
There was silence in the room for a few minutes as Officer Hank Brummel leaned forward and hid his face in his hands.
Rosa cleared her throat, then asked, âDoes Mrs. Brummel know about Charlene Winters?â
Officer Brummel shook his head. âLook, I know guys say this all the time, but Iâve never done anything like this. It just kind of happened. Charlene mesmerized me. I lost my head.â He looked at the ceiling for a moment as if confessing to God. âI love my wife; I really do. It just . . . happened. I have no excuse.â
âIâm sure youâre aware of how this looks?â Miguel said.
âI know, I know,â Officer Brummel blurted. âBut I didnât kill her! I barely even knew her. I didnât love her or anything. It was just . . . I donât know what it was. But I didnât kill her. Why would I?â
âPerhaps she was going to tell your wife?â Rosa said.
